Autocratic Style Of Leadership Education Essay

Leadership is the procedure of act uponing others to work volitionally towards an organisations end and to their best of their capablenesss. The kernel of Leadership is followership. In other words, it is the willingness of people to follow that makes a individual a Leader. It is of import to the success of any group, although the nature and manner of Leadership needed in one status may differ well from that needed in another. Leadership is important in actuating and animating the work force. Some of the Leadership manners chosen are Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez-Faire and Paternalistic.2.2.1 Autocratic manner of LeadershipAutocratic manner is besides known as the autocratic manner of Leadership. In such a manner, determination devising is centralized in the manus of the Leader himself, who does non promote engagement by subsidiaries. Indeed subordinates thoughts might be actively discourage and obeisance to orders would be expected from them. Wise leaders maintain the usage of bos sy methods to a lower limit as they know this attack closes the door to communications with the group they control ( Norman, S and Vigor, H 1991 ) . This manner of Leadership can be used at school particularly when the Administrators do non anticipate any feedback or justification ; that is one manner communicating is used. This can be used for illustration in a formal meeting with the Educator.2.2.2 Democratic manner of LeadershipUnder this manner, leaders consult the group and beg their sentiment and engagement in determination devising procedure ( Sheikh 1999, p.145 ) . The democratic manner of Leadership is more appropriate in about all state of affairss in the school. Covering with people is the most ambitious undertaking to be done. Thus Administrators can follow this manner to obtain feedback of pupils and besides welcome suggestion for the best of the pupil. In the category the Educator can follow this manner to be certain that everyone has good understood the category deliv ered to them. In this manner Educator will cognize whether they have succeeded in their undertaking or non.2.2.3 Individualistic manner of LeadershipThe individualistic manner is besides known as the free rein manner of Leadership. This manner may work efficaciously when the subsidiaries are extremely competent, able to exert self-denial and can hold the capacity to take determination ( Sheikh 1999, p.146 ) . Individualistic manner can be used when there is any event which is organized. The function of the Educator is to put their mark and leave the pupil on their ain to finish the work. Bing motivated in an event the pupil will probably to execute good in doing the readyings.2.2.4 Paternalistic manner of LeadershipThe paternalistic Style of Leadership can be helpful if it used at school. The Educator already acts as a â€Å" Father † or â€Å" Mother † for the pupil. Some pupil is even more at easiness to discourse any issue with their Educator alternatively of their ain parents. This is due to the fact that about all parents work today and the pupil find merely the Educator to whom they can show their positions, feelings and sentiments. The Administrators can besides follow this manner with the Staff of the school. This will promote the Educator to work more assurance. Knowing that they are trusted, the Educator will be more motivated to work and will therefore give their best in their work.2.3 Administrator as an effectual LeaderLeadership is portion of good direction. A Manager with a acute sense of concern and an first-class cognition of planning, commanding and forming must be a strong Leader, although if his cognition is to be of any usage. The Manager seeks to see a Leader, it is of import that he understands the qualities, attitudes, behaviour and other ingredients that contribute to Leadership. Leadership is a procedure by which a individual influences others to carry through an nonsubjective and directs the organisation in a manner that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Harmonizing to Northouse ‘s ( 2010 ) Leadership is a procedure whereby an single influences a group of persons to accomplish a common end. In this position the Administrators needs to work together with the Staff in order to accomplish the purpose and aim of the school. The common end of Administrator and Educator for the school should be the success of pupils in their instruction. Peretomode ( 1991 quoted by Sharma, S 2011 ) stated that the importance of Leadership in school for achievement of school plans, aims and attainment of educational ends. Without a proper school Leadership the purpose of doing larning a success will non be possible. The administrative competences can be measured from assorted dimensions ; from the perceptual experiences of pupils, Educators, parents, communities the instruction and non-Teaching-Staff.2.3.1 Poor LeadershipIf a Manager has hapless leading accomplishments, his subsidiaries will still make the occupation but in an inefficient manner. A hapless Leader will frequently neglect to win over his staff and will hold jobs in pass oning with the Staff efficaciously. A Leader demand to hold a certain upbringing, instruction and a â€Å" chopper † factor significance that he should hold the ability to lift above a peculiar state of affairs and to analyse it objectively.2.3.2 Can Leadership be taught?Peter Drucker ( 1954 quote d by D'Alessio F.A 2006 ) presented a sound outline: â€Å" Leadership is of extreme importance. Indeed there is no replacement for it. But Leadership can non be created or promoted. It can non be taught or learned. † Nowadays positions differ on this issue. History has legion ordinary people who after holding studied become great Leaderships for illustration Mahatma Gandhi. This is a ground why there is a great support on the positions that Leader can be trained to follow the cardinal property of good Leadership. Peoples can go good Leader through acquisition and preparation. How can Leader be born in this grim universe of today, where everything alterations every twenty-four hours? It is more productive to get down with the premise that it is possible for everyone to take. Everyone is a Leader in his ain and in whatever he does because each one has his ain manner of sing and making things. â€Å" Leadership and larning are indispensable to each other † . ( John F. Ke nnedy )2.3.3 Culture and LeaderThe clime is the feel of the organisation, the person and shared perceptual experiences and attitudes of the organisation ‘s members ( Ivancevich, Konopaske, Matteson, 2007 cited by UK essay. Case Study of Opito Organizational Management And Leadership. ) . The clime represents the beliefs about how the Staff feels at school. If the Staff is at easiness with the manner the school maps along with the manner of Leadership being adopted, this will finally take to Motivation of Staff. The pupils and the Staff of a school spend most of their clip in the school premises. Thus the clime should be adaptable to the pupils every bit good as the Staff for larning procedure to be successful. The ambiance should be enrapturing.2.4 Educator as a LeaderIn category the Educator is the exclusive Leader. The Educator needs to be able to set up a positive civilization and environment in order to do the instruction of the category becomes successful. As reported by Koutsoulis ( 2003, cited by Krishnaveni. R and Anitha. J. , 2007 ) , pupils demand a humanistic attack, effectual communicating accomplishments of the instructor, better apprehension towards them, every bit good as ability to command the schoolroom. Educator need to hold good attitudes, communicating accomplishments, persuasive attitude and should be able to switch from a friendly attack to a more terrible attack as and when required. †It is the supreme art of the Educator to rouse joy in originative look and cognition † ( Albert Einstein, scientist ) . Educator need to supervise and measure each pupil ‘s public presentation to cognize what can be done for a better betterment. Every Educator has legion chances to act upon the environment in which he or she works. A research by Muijs ( 2003 cited by Chen 2007 ) said Leadership means the capacity for Educators to exert Leadership for learning and larning within and beyond the schoolroom. Each Educator should come to cognize the pupils profoundly and to understand their backgrounds, their involvements, their penchants in acquisition, and their household configurations. Furthermore Administrators need to give Educators chances to execute professionally so that they can comprehend their functions as of import. Educators need to be emotionally strong in covering with pupils. Educators should anticipate different attack as pupils are from different background. Bing A-Level pupils, they do non hold the adulthood yet to make up one's mind of whether they are right or incorrect in their actions or in what they say.2.5 Instructional LeaderEffective Instructional Leaderships are intensely involved in curricular and in structional issues that straight affect pupil accomplishment ( Cotton, 2003 cited by Reading First Notebook ) . Leaderships can non pretermit other responsibilities, learning and larning should be the country where most of the Leaders ‘ scheduled clip is allocated. Instructional Leadership requires Administrators to liberate themselves of bureaucratic undertakings and concentrate their attempts on bettering instruction and acquisition. Instructional betterment is an of import end, a end worth seeking, and a end that, when implemented, allows both pupils and Educators to do a more meaningful learning environment. Blase and Blase ( 2000 quoted by Phillips J.A ) cite specific behaviours of Instructional Leadership, such as doing suggestions, giving feedback, patterning effectual direction, beging sentiments, back uping coaction, supplying professional development chances, and giving congratulations for effectual instruction. Instructional is more at the administrative degree. In short, Instructional Leaderships are those actions that a chief takes, or delegates to others, to advance growing in pupil acquisition ( Flath, 1989 quoted by Phillips J.A ) . The principal must possess certain accomplishments to transport out the undertakings of an Instructional Leader: interpersonal accomplishments ; be aftering accomplishments ; instructional observation accomplishments ; and research and rating accomplishments ( Lashway, 2002 quoted by Phillips J.A ) . There should be a good relation between the Administrators and the pupils. Instructional Leaderships need to cognize what is traveling on in the schoolroom. Without this cognition, they are unable to appreciate some of the jobs Educators and pupils brush. The Administrators need to follow up the undertaking of Educators by inquiring inquiries, sing schoolrooms, and reexamining subsequent informations to vouch instructional alterations are happening and advancement is being made. Furthermore, with the turning imp ortance of engineering in schools, Administrators besides need to be equipped with the cognition of engineering integrating in instruction and acquisition. In add-on to that they are responsible for guaranting that the Educators receive the counsel they require.2.6 Transformational LeadershipTransformational Leadership is a procedure that alterations and transforms persons ( Northouse, 2001 quoted by Almansour, Y.M. , 2012, p.162 ) . This means that Transformational Leadership is the ability to acquire people to alter, to better, and to be led. If the Rector and Deputy Rector are Transformational Leaders the Educators will be more divine to work. Harmonizing to Carlson ( 1996 cited by Ibrahim A.S & A ; Al-Taneji, S. , 2012, p43 ) , Transformational Leader entails traveling people to a common vision by constructing trust and authorization. With this trust and authorization Educators will be more motivated to work in the involvement of the pupil, which is giving them a better learning civilization. Educators can therefore convey in their ain invention in the manner they deliver the acquisition method in the category. This can be done through the usage of power point presentation, relevant stuffs such as articles, books, press releases, magazines, newspaper and even the usage of image, drawings and exposure when it is possible to make so. By coming in category and merely reading throughout the whole category will ne'er be a benefit to the pupil and the Educator will non even be able to hold on the full attending of pupil in this manner of educating. Thus the disposal should concentrate on offering engineering installations for the Educator to be able to go more advanced. Bass ( 1990 quoted by Rollinson D. , 2005, p.377 ) Transformational leader requires the leader to hold a vision of what needs to be done to get by with the state of affairs, the ability to pass on this vision to followings and the capableness to energies or animate them to alter their current manner of making things. As articulated by Bass ( 1985 cited by Ibrahim A.S & A ; Al-Taneji, S. , 2012, p43 ) , four factors characterize the behaviour of Transformational Leader and they are: Figure 3: Behavior of Transformational Leaderships Individual Consideration is more about Leader giving support, taking attention, understanding and gives encouragement to others. This will profit the Educator if the administrative adopt such attitude. Intellectual Stimulation is to promote being more advanced and originative. The Leader of the school can therefore advance critical thought and job resolution for the Educator to make their work more expeditiously. Inspirational Motivation is that Leader motivated their followings to make the vision set. Thus the Rector and Deputy Rector need to actuate the Educator for larning procedure to be promoted. In this factor Leader has high outlook on the followings. Idealized Influence is a Leader who is an model function theoretical account. By being a function theoretical account for the Teaching-Staff, the Administrators will be trusted and respected in the determination devising.2.7 MotivationHaving a extremely motivated Staff it is the pupil who will profit more about this. The Educator will non waver to give their best when they are motivated. Without Motivation pupil will non be willing to larn and they will happen it tiring. It is of import that the Educator makes acquisition interested for the pupil to be motivated. Educators on their side demand to be motivated to go better Educators. Last but non the least the Administrators need to guarantee themselves that the school keeps on bettering. Participative Administrators require a civilization and manner that are unfastened and flexible to be able to react to the demands and endowments of single Staff. Frankincense Leaderships need to maintain Educators motivated for the Educators to actu ate the pupil to larn. This shows that there is a rhythm on the Motivation at different degree of the hierarchy in on order to do learning procedure easier. This rhythm of Motivation is illustrated below. Figure 4: Cycle of Motivation2.8 Types of MotivationMotivation at plants operates in two ways: the Intrinsic Motivation and Extrinsic Motivation. Intrinsic Motivation is more about the motive that comes within an single and Extrinsic Motivation is about factor which comes from outside an single. Extrinsic motive is easier to understand ; it consists of desire for a touchable wages. Harmonizing to Armstrong ( 1996 p. 299 ) Intrinsic Motivation is when people can actuate themselves by seeking, happening and transporting out work ( or being given work ) which satisfies their demands or at least leads them to anticipate that their ends will be achieved. Furthermore Armstrong ( 2002 p.56 ) elaborated that the Intrinsic Motivation factors include duty ( experiencing that the work is of import and holding control over one ‘s resources ) , freedom to move, range to utilize develop accomplishments and abilities, interesting and disputing work, and chances for promotion and growing. When a staff is per se motivated they will experience an involvement and will bask their work. Educators which are deciding in his work will probably present good instruction to the pupils. The intrinsic incentives, which are concerned with ‘quality of working life ‘ ( a phrase and motion which emerged from this construct ) , are likely to hold a deeper and long-run conseque nce because they are built-in in persons and non imposed from outside ( Armstrong 1996 p. 299 ) . Extrinsic Motivation is when people can be motivated by direction through such methods as wage, publicity and congratulations ( Armstrong 2002 p.56 ) . Extrinsic Motivation includes wagess, such as increased wage, congratulations or publicity and penalties such as disciplinary action with keeping wage or unfavorable judgment ( Armstrong 1996 p. 299 ) . Whenever an Educator has excelled in his undertaking he needs to be appraised by the Administrators. This will convey more motive when an Educator is rewarded when the latter has work good and with this the 4th demand harmonizing to Maslow Hierarchy of demands will be achieved that is the Esteem needs which include accomplishment, position and acknowledgment. Extrinsic Motivation has an impact on single in a short term period merely. However Administrators need to concentrate more on the intrinsic motive of Educator in order for the Educator to stay motivated on a longer clip footing.2.9 Approachs to Motivation2.9.1 Behavioral ApproachBehaviorism is chiefly concerned with discernible behaviour, as opposed to internal events like thought and emotion ( McLeod, S 2007 ) . Behavioral is to detect any alterations in the behaviour. The Rector can follow this attack specially after giving direction or guideline to the Educator for a better acquisition procedure of the pupil. Harmonizing to Armstrong ( 2002 p. 57 ) behaviourists are interested merely in the external factors that straight influence behaviour and they believe that larning takes topographic point chiefly through the procedures of positive and negative support. The conceptualisation of larning utilizing this attack could be considered â€Å" superficial † as the focal point is on external alterations in behaviour that is non interested in the internal procedures of larning taking to behavior alteration and has no topographic point for the emotions involved the procedure ( Wikipedia ) .2.9.2 Humanist ApproachThis attack focuses on acknowledging human capablenesss in countries such as creativeness, personal growing and pick ( Memiah Ltd, 2012 ) . This attack sees the positive nature of homo being which allows one ‘s fulfilment and potency. The highest round on Abraham Maslow ‘s ladder of human motivations is the demand for self-actualization of people which consist of: Awareness and credence of themselves, openness and spontaneousness, the ability to bask work and see work as a mission to carry through, the ability to develop close friendly relationships without being overly dependant on other people, a good sense of wit and the inclination to hold peak experiences that are spiritually or emotionally hearty. ( Spark Notes LLC 2012 ) .2.9.3 Cogn itive ApproachThe cognitive attack organisations accelerate the acquisition that takes topographic point by developing their apprehension of larning and by taking stairss which expedite the procedure ( Boolaky M and Gokhool D. , 2011 p.82 ) . Cognitive theory can be more utile to director that needs theory because it provides more realistic counsel on motive techniques ( Armstrong 2002 ) . Harmonizing to Cole ( 1998 cited by Boolaky M and Gokhool D. , 2011 p.82 ) the cognitive attack is doing sense of issues and state of affairss, of developing insight and understanding and of seeing forms in their environment. Educator following this attack can assist more in decision-making. With a better understanding Educator is likely to take the right determination at the right clip.2.10 Importance of Educators ‘ MotivationThe Educators ‘ Motivation is a key for effectual acquisition to take topographic point. One facet of motive, likely the hardest to alter, lies in the personalit y of the instructor ( Eggleton P.J ) . The chief aim of the school is the success of the pupil and for this aim to be met Educator need to be motivated to supply an efficient acquisition procedure to the pupil. To be able to learn the pupil Educator demand to possess a good cognition. Furthermore, to keep a category good Educator need to utilize some humoristic attack in order to hike up the motive on pupil and the Educator in return will besides be motivated to work. Besides, when Educators are motivated they will convey in personal technique to heighten pupil larning such as engineerings as the Educator has a great impact on the scholars. We frequently see pupils ‘ motive reflected in personal investing and in cognitive, emotional, and behavioural battle in school activities ( Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & A ; Paris, 2004 ; Maehr & A ; Meyer, 2004 ; Reeve, 2006 cited by Ormrod 2008 ) .2.11 Factors act uponing Educators ‘ MotivationThere are several factors that can act upon the Educators ‘ Motivation which are: A good environment demands to predominate in the school. The school needs to possess the needed equipment and stuffs so that the Educator can let the category to work efficaciously. Recognition and feedback of Educators when they put in excess attempt for their pupil. Educators know that they will hold support in times of trouble. Administrators need to affect Educator in determination devising. Staff ‘s sharing of thoughts is encouraged by the Administrators. Staff turnover: A low staff turnover will intend that Educator is happy with his work. Encourage Educator to take portion in extra-curricular activities. A sense of trust worthy reins amongst the Educators.2.12 DecisionBased on the expressions of the theoreticians, Leadership and Motivation were viewed in different angle. This will finally assist in the analysis portion of the survey to place what can be done to increase the Motivation degree at ICC-FVI.

Aspects of love †Romeo and Juliet Essay

Now Juliet’s father has a leading role in Juliet’s â€Å"love life†. In Verona the people were catholic and it was to have arranged marriages. With Juliet as a young teenager, Capulet thought she might have been too young to get married; Capulet- â€Å"My child is yet a stranger in the world; She hath not seen the change of fourteen years, Let two more summers wither in their pride, Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride. † He was telling this to Paris. He was close to the Capulets and he seemed to impress Lady Capulet more then he did Juliet. In the story, Capulet had a few children, with Juliet as the youngest, but all part from Juliet had died through child hood. Death was very common in Elizabethan times, with the plague about and not very good medication, at least 1 in three children would most probably die through their child hood. With Juliet being his only child left, he would have liked her to have a happy life with a decent man and a decent living. He chose Paris to be more then suitable, Capulet-â€Å"And too soon marr’d are those so early made. The earth hath swallow’d all my hopes but she, She is the hopeful lady of my earth: But woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart† But maybe he didn’t want to let her go just as yet. Capulets had a reputation to live up to, and the father wanted to keep it that way. Lady Capulet wasn’t really much of a motherly figure in the story to Juliet. She never seemed to talk to her much, and when she did they were more like commands. Juliet must have been use to this as she would address her politely; Juliet- â€Å"Madam, I am here. What is your will? † Was their any family love such as the hugs, stories and giving motherly advice between Lady Capulet and Juliet? From what it seems Lady Capulet, being the Lady of the house hold is more being busy around else where rather then ever being with her daughter. The nurse played a bigger part in Juliet’s life. She gave advice, and wanted Juliet to be happy, she was not into the ‘keeping the Capulets dignity’, she didn’t seem to be the kind of person to judge but she only told Juliet what she thought would be best for her. They talk of Juliet getting married, but Lady Capulet only asks if she would and not how she feels about the whole situation, alike Lord Capulet she is soon is suggesting of her marrying Paris. Lady Capulet- â€Å"Marry, that ‘marry’ is the very theme I came to talk of. Tell me, daughter Juliet, How stands your disposition to be married? † Juliet- â€Å"It is an honour that I dream not of. † In a respectful way, Juliet has already sorted her way of getting married. She is telling her mother that although she’s honoured to be in such a position in which her family would be proud of, it’s not her ideal way of living with someone for the rest of her life. Maybe she knew what she was looking for in love, that’s if she was looking for love at that time. Paris says he loves Juliet, and wants to marry her. But from what we see, he hardly knows Juliet, not like Romeo. They don’t have the chemistry. Juliet is charmed, and he is very gentlemen like. But what is love to Paris. Paris-This is that banish’d haughty Montague, That murder’d my love’s cousin, with which grief†¦ To Paris, he wants to marry a girl who will have his children and look good, so to speak. Like the Capulets or Montague way of raising a family, not through caring love but through pride and dignity. Paris- â€Å"younger than she are happy mothers made. † Through Juliets aspect of love, before she even meet Romeo, we see that there was no other interest in men, not even when Lady Capulet asked her what she though about marrying Paris. She just replied that she is something she would not dream of. When she met Romeo she instantly clicked with him. She was impressed by the way he spoke to her, and the words he used. No one had probably talked to her in such a way before. Romeo- Romeo’s mother and father aren’t really mentioned much in the play. Lord Capulet says he is confused about his son, that he is withdrawn and he doesn’t really know him. Although he see’s him withdrawn to himself he wants him to â€Å"dedicate his beauty to the sun†, share his thoughts. Lady Capulet seem to care about Romeo as much, Lady Capulet- â€Å"O where is Romeo? Saw you him today? Right glad I am he was not at this fray. † It looks as though his parents are concerned about him very much, they look out for their son, try to know where he is, as they know he is a sensitive and gentle person. It’s very common for parent to be protective over their children in a family. Within the Montague’s, their family is based around such care of each other, and not so much about dignity, even though he was brought up to think about the families pride and dignity. Romeo and his Cousin Benvolio hang about together; he is out most of the time with him and his best friend Mercutio. He talks to both of them about love, with Juliet and with Rosaline. Now with Rosaline, Romeo thought he was in love when in fact he was just infatuated by her class, beauty and plain hard to get. He soon gets over her when he meets Juliet. Romeo and Juliet both fell for each other at the party at the Capulets house party. The first time they spoke, they both talked with holy language, and Juliet (who was quite a religious person) was taken by his flattering words, the first time they spoke. Romeo- â€Å"If I profane with my unworthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this, my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. † Juliet- â€Å"Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, which mannerly devotion shows in this, for saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch, and palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss. † They only speak like this to each other, Juliet who has never been spoken to like this before is fascinated. By him by the end of the night, she does not want to leave him and he does not want to leave her. She warns him of the dangers he would be in if he got caught but he still risks all that just to see her that one night. At this point their views of love for each other begin. This is where they want to get to know each other, as they have never meet anyone like each other before. They probably felt that no-one has ever understood them before as they did in this one night. Juliet starts to believe in love, and Romeo finds that Rosaline was not true love after all, and these guys wouldn’t want to loose contact after this night. Friar Lawrence finds that these too are meant to be. Being a Friar, it does not refer to him believing in arranged marriages. But he thought that bringing Romeo and Juliet together would solve and bury the conflict between the too rival families, Montagues and Capulets. That they would find to love each other through Romeo and Juliets love for each other. He knew that Romeo and Juliet loved each other deeply so he risked this to solve the family feud as he believed that they wouldn’t part because of there families, because they had stayed together this far.

Different aims in life Essay

Different people have different aims in life. Some focus on power, some on wealth, some want to become a rich successful businessman, some choose knowledge & education while some choose fame. Many scholars think for hours & hours that what their aim in life is terms of the best profession which suit their lifestyle. Across the wings of time few of them discovers their aim. But there are many others who are ambitious in their very childhood and find their professional goals. These people pick up their professional aim due to their interest gathered from books, passion, and parent’s/ teacher’s guidance and meeting such kind of people. I am one of those people. My aim in life is to become successful Mechanical Engineer. After my higher schooling I want to go to Mumbai or Delhi IIT (India Institute of Technology) to pursue my Engineering in the field of Mechanics. I want to serve this world with my talent because I believe that I have what it takes. My Father and Elder sister both are Engineers. My Father is an Electric Engineer and my sister is a Civil Engineer. They are my biggest source of inspiration. Being an Engineer is my personal choice. I believe that Engineering is a very noble profession that one can choose. I want to opt the field of Mechanical because I find it quite interesting than other fields. Becoming an Engineer is not compelled by my parents; I have chosen this field because this is what I want to be in my life. These days the salaries of Mechanical Engineers are quiet high and they acquire respectable positions no matter whether they are in India or any other part of the world. Aimless life is a sin these days. Aimless people are like tired travelers without any specific destination. Whatever they do in their life is by chance or circumstances or luck that comes their way. In many cases these people do not achieve anything big in life. They just survive because they have too and they are forced to. That is why I believe that each one of us should have definite a purpose in life. To achieve success determining your targets is the first step. They should identify their qualities, talents & ability to work hard. Those who fail are not actual failures because failure is a part of success but those who fail to decide their aim are real failures in life.

Business Plan, Which Is Bringing Body Implants To the Mass Market Essay

Business Plan, Which Is Bringing Body Implants To the Mass Market - Essay Example The present research has identified that biohacking has emerged as a successful business for the development of non-institutional technology and science. Tattoo studios form a part of biohacking business. With the advent of biohacker movement, the grinders have found simple ways for reimaging the development of human beings. The first case was that of a tiny magnet that was inserted in fingertips by making a small opening. As the trend for biohacker business popped up, many activities were encouraged as a part of biohacking business like the operation of the DIY kitchen, usage of knife or razor blade, rubbing ice cubes for numbing the surface of the skin and rubbing alcohol. Over the years magnets are also offered by a number of body modification artists which formed a type of body piercing. It has been noticed that there are thousands of individuals worldwide who have undergone body implantation. A member of Grindhouse, Olive Webb, has implanted the magnet in the earlier days of the invention. She was able to lift a paper clip by simply touching it with her finger. The magnet made her feel the electromagnetic fields which seemed to be her sixth sense. She could not explain the particular feeling of possessing a microwave in her body. It cannot be understood until it is felt. This paper illustrates that the entrepreneurial friend has planned for carrying out a long-term business as he has studied the market thoroughly which identified that the particular business is at a boom. It also fetches a good amount of money. Thus he has planned for targeting female customers of 30-40 years of age who will be interested in implant tattoo. He will be getting a good customer base as the current fad favors the art of tattoo and every female has the desire to have the tattoo on any part of their body. Piercing and tattoo have been famous within the female group of customers as they love to make their look more attractive by undertaking various makeovers. However, the decisio n or the plan that is taken by him can be evaluated by examining the marketing environment, market segments and pricing of the services.

Market feasasbility Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Market feasasbility - Research Paper Example Some of these services are specific to a purpose, such as marketing (Forward Marketing Group) and financing the business operations and employee programs (American Business Advisors). There are a few companies (Start-up Smart and Make-It-Fly) listed that are similar to our business plan, which is to help entrepreneurs gain access to resources and guide them through the process of starting their own company. By analyzing the business consultant market in Denver, I have discovered that there are certain needs that the entrepreneurs require which are not facilitated by the above mentioned companies. For instance, if an entrepreneur wishes to obtain a marketing plan he/she would have to search for a marketing consultant. Then he/she would have to search for a finance consultant. All this process can take precious time of the entrepreneur and therefore delay the process of starting up his own business. What the entrepreneurs need is one stop consultant who can be with them from the start till the business is established and that is the need that my business fulfills. Such consulting businesses can make a huge difference whether the entrepreneurs’ business will be getting off the ground or not. Besides the market need, there is also another reason for choosing Denver, Colorado. The entrepreneurial market in the city is growing at a tremendous rate and because all the existing consultants are focusing on certain aspects, the competition amongst the entrepreneurs would also require them to search for those consultants that offer one stop service to them. I feel confident that Denver, Colorado has room enough for another company based at the southern end of the city, where there is room to grow and develop the entrepreneur spirit. As there are so many ‘business consultants’ who specialize their services to encompass one aspect

Some historians have argued that the First World War was the logical, Essay

Some historians have argued that the First World War was the logical, perhaps inevitable, outcome of the revolutionary changes of the nineteenth century - Essay Example Some of the causes of the WWI include; imperialism, militarism, nationalism and the alliance system but the paper will discuss the first two factors. Industrial revolution which began in Britain meant local market was not enough for industrial products. Britain thus began looking for markets and labor by colonizing other nations and other countries like France followed suit such that in the nineteenth century, Britain had over five continents while France occupied large areas of Africa (Sammis, 2002). This led to rivalry among nations and scramble for remaining lands especially by Germany leading to formation of alliances in preparation for an inevitable war. For example, Germany allied with Austria so as to get a route to conquer Asia. Militarism was another long term cause of the war. Countries were engaged in aggressive military preparedness making war inevitable. Great Britain had a very large navy and Germany wanted to outdo it hence engaged in creation of arms and in retaliation, Britain improved its naval base by use of modern technology hence an arms race began that made impending war seem inevitable. For example, Britain built dreadnoughts in 1905-06 to counter Germans arms (Best et al. 2008). The arms race increased the fear of war leading to the alliance system in order to defeat enemies and continued arms race between the allies. For example, arms race between Franco-Prussian and German-Austria hence more innovative weapons like machine guns created that aided the war. WWI was the most destructive in history due to the scale of the war and use of ferocious weapons and styles. The use of machine guns, modern artillery and rifles, submarines, airplanes, gas, and tanks left many soldiers dead. The use of trench warfare did not help much as it meant total destruction for the soldiers; either kill or be killed (Stone, 2009). As a result, the war left over 15

Product Costing - Traditional Methods and Activity Based Research Paper

Product Costing - Traditional Methods and Activity Based - Research Paper Example By doing this they maintain zero inventory of building parts or what is called as raw materials (RM). Dell enjoys a loyal customer trust globally. One of the reasons for this is that the base prices of their laptops and other products are practically the same across continents. Product pricing at Dell is a serious and well thought over process through strong market research and consumer inputs. Based on the marketing debrief the research and development (R&D) center starts developmental activities on the consumer centric product. The engineers work under the strict constrict of the product cost based on the marketing requirement. The first level of product cost brainstorming is between the marketing, sales and engineers at the R&D. All quality cost parameters namely prevention, appraisal and failure (both internal and external) are considered. In the six sigma jargon another cost is considered, cost of poor quality (Juran, 1988). Dell as an organization completely negates this hidden quality cost. The costing activity of consumer goods in my organization follows the above mentioned steps towards deciding pricing of a bathing soap. The main ingredients of a bathing bar are soap noodles, fragrance, permitted colors and fillers. The cost of a 100 g net weight of bathing bar is $1.5.

Politics of Poverty and Social Welfare Policy Essay

Politics of Poverty and Social Welfare Policy - Essay Example Empowerment of low income earners has to be done so that the poor can be able to access resources that are raw materials for development. The poor lack power to get the desired resources. This situation worsens when the psychological status of these poor people is touched by powerlessness. Poverty makes the means of accumulation of resources through saving impossible to the poor people. This is because the avenues to save require some structures that have a monetary value. Poverty reduces a person’s power to compete for a resource because it influences the thinking and the power of these people (O’Brien and Finn 1). This work will seek to show that the poor can be involved in transforming the situations of their lives even in the current political atmosphere. The poor and the middle class earners are faced with various problems that cause them to join into movement to form a force that can prevail in collective bargaining. The economic recession was heavily felt among t hose who had not organized themselves into groups that could foster poverty alleviation. Low income earners, therefore, realized the difficulty to cause impact at individual levels. Poverty denies the poor opportunities to make choices. As a result, the little they had was subjected to risk of loss when they put it in simple projects. In response to economic recession, the poor resorted to various ways to alleviate their situation. The low income earners’ response to poverty was facilitated by their position in terms of power where they lacked power to influence policy formulation and implementation. The poor are more than the rich in any state and their number can be used as a means to change the policies. The low income earners can be able to secure a place in development in the current political context since they are the best people who know the pressure at which they are subjected in their position. Poor people understand projects that would work for them. This is becaus e in most cases projects by the rich come with levels of sophistication that the poor do not put up with. Through calculated collaborations, low income earners can be able to claim their rights from higher political powers, seek donors to fund projects centered on alleviation of poverty, and seek government intervention in their conditions. According to O’Brien and Finn (22-23), although the poor had responded in various ways to recession, very few of the poor went to seek financial aid from their governments or any financial institution or claimed unemployment or even protested against the government in claim of their rights. The methods most of the low income earners used as a means to respond to recession was by cutting cost, increasing the daily working hours and some went ahead to selling some of their properties (O’Brien and Finn 18). Although grouping and working to collectively bargain for formulation and implementation of policies that are friendly to them is advisable, individual response to poverty alleviation was a means that worked during the recession times. The methods they used in response to increased requirement collectively showed that low income earners have a commanding position in the current political context. In their individualized position, low income earners managed to reduce pressure posed by the increased cost of goods and services during the economic recession. As a politicized group, the low

The main objectives of this survey were as follows; The average frequency of eating at Joses Southwestern Cafà © was about 4 days per week while at Santa Fe Grill was approximately 3 days per week. Table 1 provides a breakdown of respondents’ frequency of eating for the two restaurants. 33.6% of respondents very frequently had meals at Joses Southwestern Cafà © as compared to 15.8% that very frequently had meals at Santa Fe grill. This is a confirmation of the dwindling customers for Santa fee grill. The pie charts below show the distribution of age by type of restaurant. From the chart, we can see that majority of the customers are aged between 35 and 49. This is true for both Santa Fe Grill and Jose’s Southwestern Cafà © restaurant. To be noted is the fact that Santa Fe has fewer customers aged between 26 and 43 than its competitor. Table 1c below shows the distribution of the number of children customers have at home for the two restaurants. This factor is believed to influence the type of restaurant one chooses to dine at. From the results, we can see that majority of Joses Southwestern Cafes’ customers (44.7%) have 1-2 children at home whereas the case of Santa Fe Grill majority of their customers has no children at home. In order to see if there is an association between a number of children at home and restaurant, a Pearson chi-square test was done and the results presented in table 1d show that at 5% level of significance, this association exists and it’s statistically significant. Table 1e presents results of a cross-tabulation of employee friendliness and restaurant. From the summary statistics, we learn that majority of customers at Santa Fe Grill (40.7%) disagree that the employees of the restaurant are friendly.

Juliet is the Better Lover Essay Example for Free

Juliet is the Better Lover Essay Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s greatest love story. With all the characters mixed up in love, hate, war and friendship, the bard’s tale spearheads a current debate on whether Romeo or Juliet was the better lover. This paper attempts to prove why Juliet is by far the better lover compared to Romeo. Experts have reason to believe that Romeo and Juliet were actually juveniles. Romeo was fourteen and Juliet was thirteen. This was evident in Elizabethan royalties where sons and daughters of the rich found themselves pre-arranged to sons and daughter of the same class. Girls were allowed to marry as young as 12. Between Romeo and Juliet, Juliet sacrificed more because she had to pursue her love to Romeo given the fact that she was a girl and was the younger of lover. Being a woman, much less a girl during the Elizabethan times meant following very strict rules. Breaking of these rules meant dishonor, disgrace and punishment from her parents. Although the Romeo deserves the same fate from his parents, the gender difference makes all the difference. â€Å"Elizabethan Women were totally dominated by the male members of their family. They were expected to instantly obey not only their father but also their brothers and any other male members of the family. The punishment for disobey was the whipping stool the Elizabethan girls were beaten into submission and disobedience was seen as a crime against their religion. † (2005) Of the many definitions of love, Scott Peck describes it in his book The Road Less Traveled as; â€Å"The will to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth. † (Peck, 1978) In this definition between Juliet and Romeo, it is Juliet who has extended herself. Trusting her life to the poison of the priest, she totally follows the plan hoping that through her sacrifice, Romeo and herself can live happily ever after. During those times when total faith is expected and practiced in society, the belief in earthly concoctions is almost equal to belief in witches’ ways. But because of her love for Romeo, Juliet allows her heartbeat to stop for three days choosing a life with her Romeo than a well-off life with her parents and Paris. Compared to the sacrifice of Romeo and Juliet, it is Juliet’s sacrifice that can be considered weighty because she became consistent with her selflessness for her lover. Romeo couldn’t sacrifice his vengeance for his friend who was killed by Juliet’s cousin which made the turns in the story. If love is self-sacrifice then Romeo is a better lover because he killed himself for the love of Juliet but love is not self-sacrifice per se. Love is the act of expanding oneself so that one could evolve from something to something better. To note, Juliet died twice for her Romeo. The first time was when she drank the poison and the second time was when she stabbed herself. So in the matter of the number of times the lovers tried to kill themselves for the love of the lover, it is still Juliet that outnumbered Romeo. She not only outnumbered Romeo in the time she killed herself but in the ways she did it. Romeo only used the poison once but Juliet used the poison and used the dagger to lead her to bleed to death upon her realization that her Romeo was dead. Juliet is the better lover because she was the first one who had to endure a lover’s loss. When Romeo was banished, she grieved for her Romeo more than for her cousin. If Romeo did not instantly grieve the death of his friend, maybe Juliet’s cousin would still be alive, but then again the greatest love story would not have been told. Romeo grieved for Juliet only upon knowing of her death, which made very dramatic and weighty due to his committing suicide. However, the drama did not climax at the end of his suicide but it further gained heights when Juliet took the dagger and impaled it into her chest. â€Å"Suicide is not something that happens for a simple reason. It is impossible to rap up in a nutshell the many reasons a person may want to die. The reasons for suicide range from critical injury and fatal illness to momentary sadness or a sudden and emotionally jarring shock. Some reasons may seem logical (if you are in pain and dying anyway, why prolong the suffering? ) while others seem ridiculous (a crush dumped on you in front of friends and you feel humiliated) but whatever the reason, to the person thinking of suicide, they are unbearable. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of suicides are the result of a complex combination of circumstances, emotions and a psyche in turmoil. † (Hardcastle, 2007) For Juliet, it was definitely a combination of perplexities during that very moment. But surely among them, she had the option of just continuing her life free of anything and everything. She could start anew because she was dead to her parents and families anyway. However, since she was also young and in shock about the death of her Romeo, the dagger was a quick solution to make her be eternally together with Romeo. Juliet definitely chose love. Physiologically, Juliet is more capable of being the better lover. At fourteen, boys will be boys as could be proven by the rage Romeo had when his enemy killed his friend. The clouding of the mind, never mind if he was about to kill his bride’s cousin but the rage of testosterone controlled Romeo. There are physiological differences between girls and boys that would prove their capability of experiencing true and mature love, as explained by Dr. Gurian, 1999. 1. Adolescent boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed as emotionally disturbed than adolescent girls. Given this, Romeo most likely had decided to kill himself but that decision may have been influenced with disturbed thoughts. 2. Adolescent males are four times as likely to commit suicide as adolescent females. Given this data, the suicide of Romeo would not count so much as Juliet’s suicide due to gender difference. 3. Adolescent males are routinely found to channel other primary feelings; hurt, pain, grief, into anger. Given this, there would be a possibility for Romeo to have committed suicide due to anger at the whole world than due to love for Juliet. 4. Adolescent boys are 15 times as likely as adolescent females to be victims of violent crime. Adolescent boys commit violent crime at a higher rate than adult offenders. Given this data, the suicide of Romeo does not count more in intensity than Juliet in terms of the violence confronting the adolescents. The shock, fear, courage and other emotions of putting the dagger towards her heart has more weight due to the gender difference. 5. Millions of adolescent boys experience post-traumatic stress due to family, cultural, and socio-economic situations. A post-traumatic boy is ten times more likely than his female peer to act out in a way that is dangerous to another person. Proving who the better lover is most difficult but like in any debate, the definitions must be stated clearly. For this paper, love has been defined as the act of self-sacrifice in the most mature circumstances. Love is an act where a person would consistently show in her actions and decisions that she is bound to another because she wishes the other person expansion of himself with her along with him. The sacrifice of Juliet comes early on in the play as can be taken from the excerpt; â€Å"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet. † The line illustrates that Juliet will decide not to be Capulet if Romeo do not relinquish his name. This decision also illustrates how Juliet was ready to sacrifice her whole identity just for the sake of her lover. Maybe, for Romeo to become the better lover, he should have been more mature than Juliet. Meantime, the bard’s tale is a unique example of truly big women’s capacity to love is. Didions on Morality Essay Example for Free

Didions on Morality Essay What is it that forms and drives our â€Å"moral behaviors†? Are we born with a basic sense of morality or do we develop a set of moral â€Å"social codes† to keep society from falling into chaos and anarchy? In her essay â€Å"On Morality,† Joan Didion dissects what lies beneath the surface of humanity’s morality. By recounting several stories and historical events, she shows that morality at its basic â€Å"most primitive level† is nothing more than â€Å"our loyalties to the ones we love,† everything else is subjective. Didion’s first story points out our loyalty to family. She is in Death Valley writing an article about â€Å"morality,† â€Å"a word [she] distrust more every day.† She relates a story about a young man who was drunk, had a car accident, and died while driving to Death Valley. â€Å"His girl was found alive but bleeding internally, deep in shock,† Didion states. She talked to the nurse who had driven his girl 185 miles to the nearest doctor. The nurse’s husband had stayed with the body until the coroner could get there. The nurse said, â€Å"You just can’t leave a body on the highway, it’s immoral.† According to Didion this â€Å"was one instance in which [she] did not distrust the word, because [the nurse] meant something quite specific.† She argues we don’t desert a body for even a few minutes lest it be desecrated. Didion claims this is more than â€Å"only a sentimental consideration.† She claims that we promise each other to try and retrieve our casualties and not abandon our dead; it is more than a sentimental consideration. She stresses this point by saying that â€Å"if, in the simplest terms, our upbringing is good enough – we stay with the body, or have bad dreams.† Her point is that morality at its most â€Å"primary† level is a sense of â€Å"loyalty† to one another that we learned from our loved ones. She is saying that we stick with our loved ones no matter what, in sickness, in health, in bad times and good times; we don’t abandon our dead because we don’t want someone to abandon us. She is professing that morality is to do what we think is right; whatever is necessary to meet our â€Å"primary loyalties† to care for our loved ones, even if it means sacrificing ourselves. Didion emphatically states she is talking about a â€Å"wagon-train morality,† and â€Å"For better or for worse, we are what we learned as children.† She talks about her childhood and hearing â€Å"graphic litanies about the Donner-Reed party and the Jayhawkers. She maintains they â€Å"failed in their loyalties to each other,† and â€Å"deserted one another.† She says they â€Å"breached their primary loyalties,† or they would not have been in those situations. If we go against our â€Å"primary loyalties† we have failed, we regret it, and thus â€Å"have bad dreams.† Didion insist that â€Å"we have no way of knowing†¦what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong,’ what is ‘good and what is ‘evil’.† She sees politics, and public policy falsely assigned â€Å"aspects of morality.† She warns us not to delude ourselves into thinking that because we want or need something â€Å"that it is a moral imperative that we have it, then is when we join the fashionable madmen.† She is saying this will be our demise, and she may well be correct. Hitler’s idea that he had â€Å"a moral imperative† to â€Å"purify the Aryan race† serves as a poignant reminder of such a delusion. In 1939 Hitler’s Nazi army invaded Poland and started World War II. World War II came to an end in large part due to the United States dropping two atomic bombs. If the war had continued and escalated to the point of Hitler’s Nazis and the United States dropping more atomic bombs we could have destroyed most, if not all, of humanity, the ultimate act of â€Å"fashionable madmen.† We may believe our behaviors are just and righteous, but Didion’s essay makes us closely examine our motives and morals. She contends that madmen, murders, war criminals and religious icons throughout history have said â€Å"I followed my own conscience.† â€Å"I did what I thought was right.† â€Å"Maybe we have all said it and maybe we have been wrong.† She shows us that our â€Å"moral codes† are often subjective and fallacious, that we rationalize and justify our actions to suit our ulterior motives, and our only true morality is â€Å"our loyalty to those we love.† It is this â€Å"loyalty to those we love† that forms our families, then our cities, our states, our countries and ultimately our global community. Without these â€Å"moral codes,† social order would break down into chaos and anarchy.

Weapon Trafficking When Will It End Politics Essay

Weapon Trafficking When Will It End Politics Essay The news that people hear coming from Mexico, especially in recent times have not been very positive. The continuing violence along the U.S.-Mexico border has escalated even more dramatically within the past few years, mainly because of the Mexican governments constant efforts to cut off Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTO). The violence associated with Mexican DTOs continues to hurl major challenges and obstacles towards U.S. law enforcement, while at the same time threatening the citizens on both sides of the border. Drug trafficking may be the root to these problems, but the firearms used to perpetrate crimes in Mexico are being illegally trafficked from the U.S. across the southwest Border and is causing serious problems as well. There needs to be a complete removal, or at the least a reduction of the illegal arms passing through the border, but this can only occur through an improved sense of security and supervision and regulation of the arms market. Not only will the f ailure to bring improvement to this situation raise the level of violence and deaths along the U.S.-Mexico border, but will further diminish what the border was made to stand for, in promoting free trade and globalization. To start off, Mexico itself has very strict gun laws, especially the gun-ownership regulations. Very rarely will you witness citizens carrying guns with them or around the house, because of the serious issues that revolve around the possession of these weapons. Since the countrys already existing constitution makes it legal for the citizens to bear arms, the conditions it places on the actual ownership, through amendments to the constitution prove to be much more strict and limiting. The fact that only one body is permitted to sell weapons, and it is run by the army makes it even harder to attain or own these weapons (Ellingwood). Although these rules and regulations are given to the citizens of this country, it does not mean that the weapon-smuggling situation is completely under control and taken care of; as you will learn later on, there are definitely a few ways around any law or institutional arrangement, and the involving parties definitely know how to make the most of the ways around the system by utilizing many types of illegal trade. Yet the violence in the northern border states of Mexico seems to be produced not only by weapons being brought illegally from Mexico, but also by those weapons trafficked illegally from the United States. Since these dangerous firearms are still not legally available for sale in Mexico, it leaves it up to the various drug cartels to smuggle them through the U.S. or Guatemalan borders, or even by sea as a last resort (Money, Guns). A good number of these firearms are brought in by foreign countries by cartel members that participate in these illegal trades and theft and then they are smuggled to Mexico a few at a time. Now in a neighboring country, such as our very own, where most people who own guns have the right to bear arms and are protected by the rights, a small number of gun shows are put together and showcased nearly every weekend of the year. States like Texas, Arizona and California are considered to be the three main source states and hotspots that supply for the vast majo rity of the guns that are bought and snuck into Mexico (Gunrunner). To be able to absolutely prevent these guns from making their way south is a pretty tough battle that challenges the power of the second amendment rights of US citizens against the ever so bloody battles and increasing numbers of Mexican victims of these mini wars that are killed everyday by these brutal weapons that are bought here in the US (Gun Control). As far as the locations where these guns are purchased from, the Gun shows that are put on by the source states take place a couple of times a year, as mentioned earlier. For example, in Arizona, the gun shows occur almost every weekend. They are often times organized by a variety of different groups and unified organizations. One of the well known organizations goes by the name of the Arizona Arms Association, and since they are a group that is most importantly legal and allowed, they are given the power to partake in private transactions between gun owners and citizens. In being able to utilize such a network of these strawmen, the native Mexican arms traffickers have the potential to collect over a dozen of different weapons each weekend (Cartel). After they gather these weapons each week, their next move is to smuggle them into Mexico, which is usually executed using over land routes with a wide range of vehicles and means of transportation that are able to hold a quantity of weapons that are much smaller across the various border crossings. This type of smuggling, in which smaller groupings of guns are smuggled across the border, is known to be called ant trafficking, and continues to serve as one of the biggest reasons why it is so hard to actually detect these weapons that are being pushed down south from the U.S. region of the border. Now focusing back on the gun show, in the positions of the vendor, some private vendors are often entered into the world of the gun trade by taking on the role of a supplier, where he/she takes the orders ahead of time and to make deliveries at a later time, which would most likely take place at an upcoming gun show or event (Gun Control). These people then round up the repeat clients and gradually produce the majority of the supply source for the arms traffickers which have been reported by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives also known as the (PAYAN). Once again, as mentioned earlier the main issue with this is that these transactions are not always closely and precis ely monitored, and so more times than not it puts the salesperson in a position where he/she is able to recognize interested buyers who are likely to be purchasing weapons for a third party. These so-called strawmen who serve as salesmen are the main suppliers and catalysts of these illicit and dangerous weapons that flow southbound, which they sell off to or illegally hand to gun traffickers who then round up and separate into groups and categories of the shipments at certain border crossings. Once they reach their destination in Mexico, the weapons smugglers are ready to make thousands and thousands on their merchandise (Gun Control). For example, an already used AK-47 assault rifle may sell for around 400 U.S. dollars and possibly more. In addition, an AR-15 rifle also has the potential to sell for 800 U.S. dollars up to 2,000 U.S. dollars, but that depends mostly on the model number of years it has been in production for that specific weapon as well as other options and accessories such as the scope or trigger. In Mexico, these weapons start to become more valuable and rocket in re-sell price, and in some rare cases as much as a whopping triple or more, according to the ATF (Gun Control). So an AK-47 rifle that has been purchased in Arizona for about 500 U.S. dollars might go for as much as 1,500 U.S. dollars or more once it crosses the border (Gun Control). At border crossings, Mexican customs agents are usually in the perfect position to interrogate and have the right to detect all smuggled weapons, but their can be a gut-wrenching one at times. Many times, these agents are given a pretty harsh ultimatum which goes by the name of Plata o plomo, meaning silver or lead which then translates into take the bribe or take a bullet. This message, is often times sent by Mexican organized crime groups and targeted to those who patrol the Mexican side of border crossings, known as plazas (Cartel). So here is another factor in why it may be difficult at times to put a halt to the weapon trafficking. Since these Mexican cartels are so menacing and uncooperative, the custom agents who are given the task to detect weapons, are presented with life and death decisions. Certain happenings like these just add on to the fact that it will be difficult to put an end to this war. These kinds of encounters are vital in understanding the rise of violence along the borders, because agents should not be in a position to be fearing of their lives. In the US, the second amendment advocates and supports the gun shows that many people consider an excuse to make weapon smuggling allowed and operating. While the political views surrounding tracing and information sharing can be a bit complicated, the procedure of buying the guns and the required background checks has been reorganize and restructured. These background checks are not required at gun shows because the sales are oftentimes considered to be made between two private and unlicensed individuals instead of a licensed dealer and an individual, which usually takes place in legitimate gun stores where a background check is indeed mandatory. Even the background checks that are made in gun stores are simple and quick (Gunrunner). For example, when a customer at a store is ready to make his/her purchase, the seller of the product is supposed to make a phone call to an ATF hotline, where the person gives out the proper information to the person talking on the other end of the hotl ine. Usually, this process should take less than five or ten minutes, but within the past couple of years, this background check has transformed into a slow and grueling process (Gunrunner). As for the strawmen, who buy off the weapons from law abiding gun merchants serve as a stepping stone into the crooked world of the grey market, where the weapons stay put until they are smuggled into Mexico and then resold. Before these guns are let into the hands of others, usually for criminal use, expert gunsmiths thoroughly check and inspect the working parts, and clean them for the necessary adjustments to transform a usual semi-automatic into a dangerous fully automatic assault weapons. They tweak parts of the gun and make them stronger. Once the strawman flees the scene of the store with gun in their hand, or leaves the show area in the case of a gun show or event, it becomes pretty much impossible to trace the weapon until it is picked up or discovered at a crime scene or if it has been seized. Often times, the weapons that have been captured in Mexico are able to be traced back to gun stores in the US, but the only pieces of information the gun dealer is allowed to legally share with is the information that has already been attained and solidified by the background check. As you can see, the tracing of the weapons captured in Mexico back to the US is proves to be a very complicated and frustrating matter. Due to this complicated process, a large number of weapons usually remain untraced due to the fact that the agents do not want to harass or bother with the bureaucracy (Cartel). In the U.S., there are approximately 2 million guns owned currently, and at any given time, any one of these guns has the potential to be sold to both men and women who will then smuggle them to Mexico. Reasons can range from personal use and self-defense while others for recreational or criminal use. When put together, the mixture of such a enormous supply with demand mixed in with the ant-trafficking produces a countless number of opportunities and possibilities, variables and pretty much leaves the ATF and others with only a limited arsenal of legal tools and, most importantly, gives them the constitutional rights to respect and defend (Gunrunner). As you can see, the conflict here resides in the fact that there are so many possible ways for these weapons to be smuggled, and with all the underground activity that is going on, it can be a very difficult task for the ATF to track down these trades at times. In a sense, the amount of illegal trafficking that is being presented here c an also be overwhelming to the forces that are trying to prevent the illicit trafficking of these weapons. As far as the types of guns that are smuggled, the most popular, or common smuggled firearms include the AR-15 and AK-47 type rifles, FN 5.7 caliber semi-automatic pistols and a variety of .50 caliber rifles and machine guns (AK-47). About a fourth of these AK-47 assault rifles that have been seized have also been created and fixed up to select fire weapons, which then allows for the assault rifles to be used by the cartels (AK-47). In the past, there have been a great number of reports regarding grenade launchers being used against security forces, and at least a dozen M4 Carbines with M203 grenade launchers have been confiscated (AK-47). It was believed that a lot of these lethal and high power weapons alongside their related accessories were actually stolen from U.S. military bases. However, the majority of these military grade guns and heavy duty weapons like grenades and light weight rockets are brought in by the cartels via the humongous supply of arms that remained after the w ars in Central America and Asia. The weapons that are being smuggled are serious weapons that can cause heavy damage and harm, so just the fact that the weapons talked about in this arms trafficking war are heavy duty once again reminds us of how dangerous this situation can get. This constant flow of arms between groups has lead to what has been dubbed the iron river of guns, because of the pouring amount of ammunition and light weapons that have been in flow southbound into Mexico, and how the organized crime hit men and others then use them in order to fight off the Mexican military and police. More times than not, innocent civilians are caught in the midst of shoot outs and random collision between the opposite groups and that is what leads to the rising number of deaths and high volume of violence throughout the years. The resulting body count that is the end product of this violence has greatly pressured the Mexican government over time to call for additional help from the U.S. capital, but these leaders have continued to remain silent and stubborn to put forth a strict gun control legislation. Many have waited and waited for someone to step up to the plate and address the problems along the border, but the subject has been ignored time and time again. Finally, in April of last year, a statement was made by U.S. President Barack Obama regarding the ongoing arms trafficking situation between the U.S. and Mexico, and to no surprise it sparked a serious and very much heated debate. The President, who referred to the data gathered from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (A.T.F.), stated that 90% of the weapons that were seized in Mexico could be traced back to the U.S. (ATF) In concurrence with supporters of putting forth a stricter gun regulation and opponents of the so-called War on Drugs, this information helped their cause and pushed to strengthen their cases. On the other side of the table, the statistic of 90% was greatly criticized and put down by the people who were against the finding of new or alternative solutions to the current situation in Mexico and also to any thoughts or ideas of making some changes regarding gun ownership in the U.S. Out of all the top news corporations, Fox News projected that the percentage of arms that could be traced back to the U.S. was actually closer to 17% percent (Gunrunner). This is a prime example of how things can get taken out of context and a serious issue at hand can be mistaken or overlooked because of little details that are misrepresented or reported. Not only does this add more unnecessary nonsense to a situation and blow it up bigger than what it already is, but it makes the already existing problem a dragging subject. In order to give the material substance and to enhance its rich meaning, all data must be presented in its original context; otherwise, statistics risk becoming meaningless sound bites and generalizations. In the Firearms Trafficking Report, given by the American Government Accountability Office (GAO), they explain the importance that even though it is pretty much impossible to know the exact number of firearms that are illegally smuggled into Mexico in a certain year, roughly 87% of the firearms that are obtained by the Mexican authorities and traced within the past couple of years originally started off in the U.S., according to the data that was gathered from Dept. of Justices Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Also, according to the Mexican and U.S. officials, these firearms have been increasingly more powerful and lethal in recent years. The report continues to polish and purify its data and information, by pointing out that between 2005 and 2008, more than 90% of the firearms that were obtained in Mexico and traced have once again, come from the United States (Gunrunner). When put together, there are a couple of elements that make the overall presentation of thi s data more convincing than just some random statistics put together because there was limited time frame, there was a specific set of weapons seized and traced, which applies to all illegal trade, and that the truth of the matter of the arms trade was imprecise. With all that being said, besides all the conditions and uncertainties that the percentages hold in these reports, there is no denying that there is a considerable amount of movement of weapons from the U.S. to Mexico that, to the dismay of many people, find their way into the hands of the people that are involved in this problematic drug trade. The G.A.O. report makes note of the fact that this trafficking is certainly not new to officials on the border, explaining that the U.S. and Mexican government and law enforcement officials did not see any reason why the drug cartels would go through so much hassle and endure the difficult task of obtaining a gun somewhere else in the world and then transporting it to Mexico when it is so easy and so simple for them to do so from the U.S. (Ellington). This proves to be in unison with the reports statement that even though the eTrace data only corresponds to data from the gun trace requests that were turned in from confiscation in Mexico and n ot all the guns seized, it is currently the only methodical and precise data available. Furthermore, the conclusions that the majority of firearms seized and traced were originally in the United States were consistent with the final conclusions reached by U.S. and Mexican government and law enforcement officials personally involved in the prevention and reducing of arms trafficking to Mexico (Cartel). The G.A.O.s data proves to be pretty clear and straight forward in its presentation. Although, the 90% figure that is being brought up constantly in these reports is just an extra number that creates a shock factor to an already stirring issue. Still, while discussions continue as to the appropriate use of this number, the reality is still readily apparent: there is an important and undeniable illegal market of weapons at the U.S.-Mexico border that fuels the violence between different drug-trafficking organizations. In Loreys book The U.S.-Mexican Border into the twenty-First century, he argues that the long-term objective of thinking and policymaking should be to overcome the U.S.-Mexican border (Lorey 12). When he says this, it could mean resolving material inequalities between the two sides of the boundary and more importantly, reducing conflict between the nations. Weapon trafficking is a serious issue that has been lingering for many years, and in order to cooperate with Loreys arguments, the weapons that are short in Mexico need to be dealt with in a different manner. Also, the violent conflicts between the government and drug cartels need to be put to rest. The task at hand may be difficult and long, but there are blueprints to solutions that can be implemented. The main obstacle and challenge that lies ahead in the fight against trafficking, and also where the conversation should be the focus of, is to address the different flaws in the system that ultimately makes way for such arms-trafficking to happen. The G.A.O. report makes not of certain factors that make trafficking possible, including faults and weaknesses found in both the Mexican and U.S. dealings, as well as the system of government: Uncontrolled and universal corruption in the Mexican government; Fragile and weak institutional links and information sharing between A.T.F. and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that lead to incomplete data; The absence of a Spanish language version of the eTrace program to be utilized by the Mexican authorities. Focusing in on these issues will help improve the quality of information being received by both U.S. and Mexican authorities, which can also lead to a much more informed and knowledgeable anti-arms trafficking strategy. This do es not mean that there must be a complete stop in the ongoing actions and efforts to reduce the weapons trafficking, but that the information gathering and collection and sharing between the countries and institutions must get better. There is hope in finding solutions to these weaknesses in the system. In efforts to help improve information collection and sharing, the ATF is hopeful that future funding and increased cash flow will eventually allow for these manuals (eTrace program) to be translated into Spanish, and also to put in a greater number agents on the border alongside an expansion of real-time intelligence sharing between the ATF and the many agents in Mexico. But besides the obviously simple and easy task at hand of translating English to Spanish, the new plans of the Merida Initiative, which is the name of the new proposal brought forth, guarantees to give the Mexican authorities scanners. These scanners, which will be planted at or near the main border crossings, will then be set up completely in order to detect and locate the drugs in traffic moving north and guns in traffic moving south (Mex). There are little things that can change that can help lead to the ultimate goal of reducing the smuggling of these weapons into Mexico, and it is reassuring to hear that after so many years, things are starting to progress and advance in putting an end to a situation that has caused so many problems for so many years. But it is also very important for us not to lose sight of some of the larger issues at hand surrounding arms trafficking at the U.S.-Mexico border. We must keep in mind that in both countries, even with the few restrictions, the weapons markets are legal. And as it applies to all kinds of markets, it is in the interest of those that are involved in the business to keep it alive and running. Being a weapon dealer, especially in the U.S. it is a very vital role they play in the market. For example, according to a 2006 report, the Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations, also known as the CATDN put together and produced by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (C.R.S.), which is an office of the Library of Congress, the United States was by far the leading supplier of weapons to the developing world (ATF). Furthermore, in a report that came out in more recent times, the C.R.S. reported that for a 3 year span for the 2005-2008 timeframe, the United States and Russia st ood tall and completely took charge of the arms market in the developing world in the value of arms transfer agreements. These statistics may seem honor worthy and impressive, but when considering the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, the statistics seem to diminish in value and glory as the weapons that are being brought to Mexico from the U.S. is doing more harm than it is doing good. These reports have also made it clear that is it the eighth consecutive year in a row that the United States has been a leader and top force in worldwide arms deliveries (Gunrunner). And even though the report does not really break down the information for the Latin American region, the report also makes clear note that the U.S. and Russia are the regions two biggest suppliers of these weapons. Even though the U.S. is the world leader in weapons agreements according to these reports, there are indeed other countries that also sell and re-sell weapons. While the data from the reports seems to confirm that the vast majority of these weapons are found and captured in Mexico make their expedition into the country over the U.S. border, it is also most likely that many of these weapons travel through different routes as well. A good number of the arms seized could have also arrived in Mexico through legal transactions that occur time to time between governments but somehow have found their way into the illegal market coincidentally and ultimately into the hands of these drug cartel members. The data from reports may explain general facts and information, but sometimes things can happen without any documentation, and that is where the information gathering and collecting, and addressing of these actions needs to shape up. In conclusion, the ongoing discussion and debate on the U.S.-Mexico border and also on the future of the relationship between these two countries is not an easy one to put to rest or come up with a solution. There are so many important subject matters that are also in need of attention: immigrant migration (legal and illegal), the drug policy, border communications, homeland security, and a mutual environment, just to name a couple. It is clear that, although the tiniest details have the ability to offer a foretaste into the bigger picture, to rely and base the conversation purely on the immediate, just like the debate over Obamas use of the 90% statistic, is to completely lose focus of the much greater and more significant debate that holds the future of a complex and vibrant relationship. The reality of all this is that an illegal arms market is one discussion that fits that description and will be a hot issue for many more years to come until the problem is fixed permanently. In t his circumstance, it is clear that the number of illegal weapons passing through the border every year must be significantly and immediately reduced, and this can only happen through tighter supervision and adjustment of the arms market.

Infomercials And Other Dishonest Commercials Essay -- essays research

Infomercials and Other Dishonest Commercials The other night I was sitting in front of the television watching a late night show, when a commercial break came on, I instinctively clicked on the remote to flip through the channels to see what else was on. As I surfed through the channels I came across dozens of info-mercials, a commercial for getting a college degree at home, and a few psychic hotline advertisements. I stopped clicking the remote after a while to see what the commercials were selling, and to see how cheep the products were. There were advertisements for how to get a better body, the "fountain of youth" make-up, and the charcoal-less grill. It is amazing what they come up with nowadays. As I continued surfing I came across Sally Struthers trying to sell an "earn your college degree at home" commercial, honestly, how good can that kind of degree be? Then as I kept flipping, I came across the "psychic network of friends" advertisement, just as they were offering a "free psychic reading to first time callers" all that was required was that a certain 1-800 number be dialed and a person could get a reading. Then to show that the reading was accurate, they had people come on and say that their experience with the psychic was "life changing," and that "it was so real†¦ the psychic knew everything." It is amazing what people will fall for in this day and age. Info-mercials are basically half hour commercials that attempt to sell products to watchers. The products that most info-mercials offer are things that are said to "improve someone's life" but in most cases the products are rip-offs and are an easy way for the manufacturer's to make money. Some of the products include the "AB-flex," a simple rocking seat that is supposed to hold this unearthly power to flatten a persons stomach. The "AB-flex" guarantees to "make it easier to develop stomach muscles, without the assistance of any other machine, in just thirty days" they also claim that "this piece of equipment can make you feel younger and give you more energy." There is also an info-mercial for "the fountain of youth" make-up, the make-up is said to make skin appear younger than it actually is; this product plays off the idea of women hating to gr... ...s reliant on "their own personal psychic" for information about their future life, there is almost no turning back. These hotlines, I have to admit, are a really good money maker. Who would not want to know what is going to happen to themselves in the future? It would tempt even the most rational person to call up the number to get a glimpse into their future. The world is not longer filled with honest people. All that people are out for nowadays is money, and they will do anything to get it, even if it means lying, deceiving, and bribing people into things; They will stop at nothing. Salespeople reason this by that if the people that are watching are gullible enough to buy or call, then they deserve to be ripped-off. Honesty in sales no longer exists, it has been replaced by lying and cheating. Consumers are no longer safe from these deceivers, instead they must arm themselves with knowledge and common-sense. For some people this may be a challenge, they have already been drawn into the trap of these liars, and it is difficult for them to escape the trap, but if we are to survive in this new world of dishonest people, then we must be armed.

The Question of Freedom in America :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays

The United States' democratic system embraces its numerous obligations in a manner which promotes a comfortable and effective society in which the citizens may embark on everyday life knowing that the government is continually engrossed in performi ng its duties to protect and support the rights of the people. Although suicide is illegal, the government must recognize the trauma of those who are terminally ill in order to maintain a fair and equal democracy. By weighing these ideas and recognizing the dignity of an individual along with the law, government attempts to provide a suitable life for all. Through combined efforts of freedom of expression and censorship, liberty is maintained, because both the speaker's and the listener's rights are re spected. The government recognizes that all human life is precious; and, therefore it does its best to enable each individual the ability to gain their desired position in life throug the help of social services. A position not n ecessarily of vast wealt h, but one in which a person may feel content and gratified. Jefferson envisioned such cases as above long before they were contemplated; it is through the Declaration of Independence in 1776, he reflected his strong, intellectual beliefs (Jeffers on 615). Of the most important part of Jefferson's philosophy is the following quote: Â   All men are created equal, they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To secure these rights governments are instituted, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed. Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter it. (616) Â   In accordance with the remainder of the Declaration of Independence, this statement has been the basis of both human rights and overall justice in American democracy. Because there is a partnership between the government and the people in the U nited States, society has improved in every aspect. The government recognizes and embraces responsibility, knowing that the citizens may control their own lives without harming others. Likewise, individuals are given the ability and courage to pursue a joyful life. Hence, people are free to express themselves with all intention towars respecting individual freedom of others.

john dryden :: essays research papers

John Dryden was born on August 9, 1631 in the Vicarage of Aldwinkle All Saints in Northamptonshire, England (DISCovering Authors 1). He was a cute, young boy who was described as â€Å"short, stout, and red-faced† (Britannica 8). His father was a countryman, and both his parents were very fond of Parliament siding with the Parliament Party against the King (Britannica 1). He was eleven years old when the war broke out between the royalist forces and the revolutionary forces, and that is when his life began to change. It was the start of a period of time when England became a republic ruled by Parliament. His parents were well known around the town, and had a lot of connections with wealthy people. Because of those connections, they were able to find a scholarship so that he could attend Westminster School at a very young age (DISCovering Authors 1). His Professor, Richard Busby, provided him with an education (DISCovering Authors 1). It was here that he published his first poem, Upon the Death of the Lord Hastings (DISCovering Authors 1). This poem had special meaning for him because it was about one of his good friends who died of small pox. At the age of 19, he was elected to attend Trinity College in Cambridge. Dryden graduated in 1654 while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (Britannica 1). A few months after his graduation, he received some very bad news- his father had died suddenly. He then became in charge of his family and the small estate where he grew up (DISCovering Authors 1). In 1658, his career was revived and he began to write once again. His first work was an elegy called Heroique Stanzas, which was about the death of Cromwell, and detailed how he was such a brave English statesman (DISCovering Authors 1). He began writing poetry in 1660 in the form of Neoclassical (Wasserman 40). That same year, he was granted a couple of patents from Charles II for a theatre. However, the plays were not too successful. Two years later, the theater was closed by the Puritans (Britannica 1). Dryden published Astraea Reddux in 1660 which was the most successful and prominent of all his poems. Along with others, they wrote a poem to welcome Charles II as he was being restored to the throne. It contained more than three hundred lines in rhymed couplet (Britannica 1).

Nypd Case

Columbia Business School Revised December 18, 2000 The New York City Police Department Patrol System The City of New York is divided into 73 precincts. These precincts are the basic managerial units for the operation of the familiar police patrol cars (called radio mobile patrols or RMPs) we see on the City streets. For staffing purposes the Police Department divides the day into three eight-hour tours of duty: 12 midnight to 8AM, 8AM to 4PM, and 4PM to 12 midnight. A particular police precinct such as the 26th, in which Columbia University stands, may have 6 patrol cars in the field during the typical 8-to-4 tour.In New York about 1200 cartours are fielded on an average day — about 200 on the 12 to 8 tour, about 400 on the 8 to 4 tour, and about 600 on the 4 to 12 tour. Most cars are staffed with two police officers. The primary tasks of the patrol cars are responding to emergencies that are phoned in by citizens via the 911 emergency telephone system and patrolling the stree ts. Annually, there are about 10 million calls received by the 911 system. Incidence of emergency calls is generally very unpredictable, but incidents are most prevalent in the early evening hours.Emergency incidents vary in severity and importance — ranging from reports of crimes in progress to complaints about loud neighbors. Roughly 10% of calls are potentially serious and get high priority from the police. When not responding to 911 calls, patrol cars patrol in their assigned neighborhoods, referred to as sectors. Each precinct typically has 4 to 8 sectors. â€Å"Back-office† operations for the 911 system are located in Police Headquarters in downtown Manhattan at One Police Plaza. Incoming 911 calls are handled by banks of telephone operators, grouped by borough. The operators screen the calls to determine whether or not they are legitimate police matters, and key in to the central computer system information about the time, location, and nature of the incident. If the incident was not previously reported, the information is electronically relayed to the police patrol dispatcher for the appropriate precinct. NYPD Patrol System Columbia Business School p. 1  © 1998, Linda V. Green – 67 – Dispatchers are civilians who are responsible for assigning patrol cars to 911 incidents in the precincts they handle. They also monitor the status of incidents and patrol cars and input all relevant information to the central computer system. Dispatchers are typically responsible for 2 or 3 contiguous precincts. When a dispatcher receives a new incident, the information is automatically added to a computer screen for that precinct, and the job is added to the dispatch queue in priority order. When a patrol car from the precinct is available, the dispatcher will assign it to the next job in the dispatch queue. If the incident is a dangerous one, more than one car may be dispatched. All communications are via radio When a car is dispatched to a jo b, it first travels to the scene of the incident. If the incident is still active, the officers perform whatever tasks are called for and, when done, write up required reports and radio to the dispatcher a final status code. The amount of service time per car per incident (including travel time) varies greatly from incident to incident, but overall it averages about 30 minutes. Allocation of the 1300 car-tours among the precincts is a complex and sensitive issue.Precincts vary greatly in population, physical area, frequency of 911 calls, incidence, and type of crime and special needs. Moreover, the rate and type of 911 calls may vary by day of the week and by season. For these reasons, allocations must be adjusted regularly, and thus it is necessary to have a fast and efficient computer-based method to help determine allocations. Fortunately, accurate data is readily available from the 911 computer system which records detailed information about each call. The table below illustrate s the type of data that is collected and used to help determine allocations for each 8 hour tour of duty.Though at any given point in time the total number of RMP’s is fixed, occasionally the city decides to either increase or cut the number, usually as a reflection of the financial status of the city. The marginal cost of adding a fully staffed car for one tour-of-duty for a year is approximately $300,000 ($230,000 of which is for labor). Suppose the city consists of only six precincts as shown in the table. Your assignment is to allocate patrol cars among these six precincts for the tour of duty described by these data. You may assume that, on average, a car spends 30 minutes on each call in each precinct. Furthermore, statistical analysis has shown that service times are well modeled by an exponential distribution. NYPD Patrol System Columbia Business School p. 2  © 1998, Linda V.
